Abernethy Pearl

Abernethy Pearl

The Abernethy Pearl was found in 1967 by a professional pearl diver, William Abernethy.  He found this pearl in the River Tay in Scotland which has been famous for its freshwater pearls since ancient times. The River Tay is known for their odd shaped mussels, Unio Margaritifera. The fast current of this river creates rapids and rough waters which is an ideal habitat for these pearl bearing mussels.

The Abernethy Pearl has a pink tint to it and is about 12.5 mm.  It weighs 11 carats and is almost perfectly round!  This is very rare for freshwater pearls.

The Abernathy Pearl can be found in the Cairncross Jewelry Store in Perth, Scotland.
