Pearl of Lao Tzu/Pearl of Allah

Pearl of Lao Tzu/Pearl of Allah

The largest pearl on record is the Pearl of Allah.  Discovered off the coast of the Palawan Islands in the Philippines in 1934, the Pearl of Allah got its name from the resemblance of a turbaned man.  The pearl was brought to America by Wilburn Cobb in 1939, who wrote accounts about how he retrieved it from a Philippine Chief in exchange for saving his sons life.

Whatever the story may be the Pearl of Allah is certainly an amazing find.  It is about 9.45 inches long and weighs 14 pounds.  It has a sort of porcelain look which is caused by the interior of the giant clam from which it was recovered. The Pearl is not currently on display, however for a brief time it was in New York City at the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.

The pearl is now valued at $40 million.
