In the Russian Orthodox Church each Easter, the Czar presents an egg to a member of his family. In 1898 an egg was presented to the Russian Czar’s wife, Alexandra Feodorovna.

Created by Peter Carl Faberge in 1898, the Lilies of the Valley Egg contains many pearls that are meant to look like individual flowers. They are carefully placed on the pink enameled background which also consists of gold, diamonds, rubies, rock crystal and watercolor on ivory. When opened, there are pictures of the Czar and his two daughters. This egg is the only one made by Faberge in the Art Nouveau style.

The Lilies of the Valley Egg has traveled around the world with the “Pearls: A Natural History” exhibit, which was organized by the American Natural History Museum in New York City.
