La Regente is known as the largest natural, regular shaped pearl in the world. It is described as “silvery-white” and has a distinct glow to it after all of these years. It was discovered in 1811 and was recorded to be 346.27 grains, by Napoleon I.

The oval shaped pearl was put into a tiara for Marie Louise, Empress of France at that time. Then in 1853, Napoleon III removed the pearl from the tiara and mounted it onto a diamond brooch for wife, Eugenie de Montijo.

After being placed on a necklace along with many other pearls, diamonds and sapphires by a Middle-Eastern family, La Regente was put up for auction in 2005. It sold for a record breaking $2.5 million to an unknown buyer in Geneva.
