This single pearl from the early
20th century, weighs 111 ½ grains and is a perfect sphere. It has a
silvery-white color and has no blemishes or holes on it. It is said to have come from India and
purchased by the Zozima brothers from Moscow.
The Zozima brothers kept La Pelegrina pearl very safe in a sea urchin shell and placed in a box, inside of another box. The pure beauty of this pearl could not be seen unless removed. It is believed, however that months before the last Zozima brother died in 1818, many of his fine jewelry was stolen from him and this unfortunately included La Pelegrina.
Along with that known La Pelegrina, there is another pearl very similar that is also known by this name. It is 133.16 grains and has been passed through the royal families of Spain and France for 350 years. This pearl is pear-shaped and is believed to have a South American origin. This La Pelegrina was last seen in an auction in Geneva in 1989 and sold for $463,800.
