The Imperial Hong Kong Pearl is believed to have originated in a saltwater oyster between Southern China and Northern Australia. The pearl is a silvery-white color and weighs 127.5 carats. It has the dimensions of 26 x 39 mm. Because of its irregular drop shape, the Imperial Hong Kong Pearl is described as a baroque pearl.

This pearl is believed to have once been owned by Empress Dowager Tz’u-Hi, who ruled China for 48 years from 1861-1908. When she was buried, her tomb was filled with pearls and gems and a large pearl was placed in her mouth to preserve her body. 20 years later her tomb was robbed and the jewels ended up in Hong Kong and purchased by Western companies that were based there. Eventually the large pearl ended up with the United States company, “Imperial Pearl Syndicate,” in the 1940s.
The Imperial Hong Kong Pearl is now set in a platinum and diamond pendant with a platinum leaf on top.
