Austrian Imperial Crown

Austrian Imperial Crown

The Austrian Imperial Crown was made in Prague in 1602.  It was originally created for Emperor Rudolf II who had been the Roman Emperor since 1576.   It was eventually brought to Austria and now has a home in the treasury in Vienna.

The crown is made of three parts, the Mitre, the Circlet and the High Arch. Among the many intricate details the Circlet contains rows of elegant pearls that follow the contours of the golden crown. The cutting of these precious gems was relatively new at the time and help to make the crown look majestic.

After the crown, the Imperial Orb and Sceptre were commissioned. They are both also ornamented with many beautiful pearls.
