Illinois Author Writes Book Filled with Grandmother’s “Pearls of Wisdom”
Rev. Doctor James Ian “Cracker” Walter has written a special book, sharing some of the stories who helped to shape the man he is today. “The Human Spirit” is a book of stories his Granny Walter told him over the years.
According to Oanow.com, Rev. Walter says the book is about three things: laughter, coping with tragedy and the belief that life has a deeper meaning. Walter’s Granny lived to be 103 and had many stories and pearls of wisdom to share over the years. His Granny would stay with his family often especially as he grew up during his childhood in the 1930’s.
Rev. Walter is now retired but was the executive director of the East Alabama Mental Health Center and is an Episcopal priest. While some of the things his Granny said to him seemed to be a “mystery” at the time, they stuck with him and were later understood as he became older. Some might think this is part of growing up and others might believe this is part of the pearls of wisdom – finding the lesson for yourself instead of having something “forced” upon you.
What a wonderful way to remember his Granny Walter in a book filled with her pearls of wisdom, now teach all of us. That we all can learn from Granny Walter’s wonderful pearls of wisdom is a great gift.
As Mother’s Day approaches, now is the perfect time to think of that lovely pearl gift – and also that “pearl” your Mother or Grandmother might have to share with you.
Spend time together and ask your Mother or Grandmother “What have you learned about life that is meaningful?” or “What would you want to tell your grandchildren or other young people about life?” Try to ask questions that will prompt a conversation.
Remember that while you may think of a life circumstance that was meaningful, your Mother or Grandmother may think of an entirely different one. Let them choose what they want to use as their pearls of wisdom. This is their choice, not yours.
Use a simple recording device. Taking notes can often be cumbersome. Use a recording device that is small and silent so your Mother or Grandmother doesn’t think about it.
Suggested pearl gifts for Mother’s Day:
Try a set of pearls. A pearl necklace and bracelet with matching earrings can be a lovely gift for any woman. Pearl sets give a woman an instant “look” that easily compliment any outfit.
Spring is a great time to wear pearls that look lovely with spring fashions like a pearl bracelet or pearl earrings. This season shows more skin than winter or fall. A pearl bracelet will draw attention to your arms and shoulders.
A pearl pin is a very traditional Mother’s Day gift as many women like to wear pins. Try giving your Mother a pretty scarf that compliments this pin.
