Pearl jewelry is a popular gift at holiday time. If you have a daughter, its easy to want to give her the best – and the best pearl jewelry is a popular choice.
But is she ready for real pearl jewelry? Some young teens are prepared to take care of pearl jewelry and others may need a bit longer before they can have it.
Here are some of our suggestions to help you decide if your daughter or granddaughter is ready for pearl jewelry. We know you love pearl jewelry – just as we do! The very best gift of pearl jewelry is one that will be enjoyed and treasured for many years to come. Giving your daughter this gift is a wonderful thing when she is ready to receive it.
#1. Does your daughter take care of her belongings?
While you may say to yourself, “I wish her room was neater” or “Sometimes she loses things” remember that no child is perfect just as no one is perfect. If most of the time she takes good care of her belongings and does not lose things often, this is a good sign that she is ready for pearl jewelry of her own. Pearl jewelry is delicate and needs extra TLC. It needs to be stored in its own jewelry box or cloth to keep it from scratching. You want to be sure she can take care of her pearl jewelry properly.
#2. Has she shown an interest in pearl jewelry?
This is one to pay attention to. Perhaps she has admired your pearls or an older sister’s pearls when they are worn for a special occasion. If pearls are something she’d love to have, then your daughter would likely work a bit harder to take care of them. Many young teens need to be shown how to take care of their pearl jewelry. Showing her how to take care of her pearl jewelry – such as taking it off before removing her makeup or putting it on after she puts on her makeup – can help her to do a good job of taking care of it. Giving her a special jewelry box to keep her pearls in is also very helpful.
#3. Have you lent your pearls to your daughter occasionally?
Now this is often an important step to giving your daughter pearls. If you have lent your daughter your pearls and she has enjoyed wearing them, this can show you how well she will take care of them. It can also show her how special she’ll feel having her own set of pearl jewelry. Choose a piece of pearl jewelry and let her wear it to a party, school dance or other event.
Many young teens can learn to take care of pearl jewelry when they are shown how to do so. Give your daughter or granddaughter the chance to wear a piece of your pearl jewelry and let her discover a love for pearls just as you have found yours. Pearls when taken care of can last for generations. The pearls you give her now in her teens could easily be the ones she wears for her wedding day, or that she lets her daughter wear when she is ready to wear her first pearl jewelry. It is a wonderful gift for the holidays she’ll always remember.
