Peter Truong takes an annual diving trip to Mendocino, California – and this year’s one is likely to stand out as more memorable than others. According to WorldRecordsAcademy.com, Truong found an abalone pearl that is rare and is 718.50 carats. It is considered to be the world’s largest natural abalone pearl.
The earlier Guinness record holding largest natural abalone pearl was just 469.13 carats and was also found in California, in the Salt Point State Park. This lovely abalone pearl is owned by Wesley Rankin and named “Big Pink.”
Truong has not named his pearl yet but admits that his family has been calling it a “horn” because of its shape. Looking at the photos you’d probably agree that it looks quite like a horn indeed.
The glimmering, shining, iridescent color of the abalone pearl is quite beautiful. Many may not realize that the abalone pearl cannot be man made – these pearls can only be found in nature. While abalone is pretty common, it is actually quite rare for them to create pearls. Simply finding an abalone pearl is rare – and a large abalone pearl is very rare indeed.
Pearl lovers and jewelry lovers, let’s all take a moment to admire this beautiful, large and nature abalone pearl. They are rather unique and simply aren’t found most of the time. Isn’t is lovely?
Congratulations to Truong on his great find while diving.
