The most important holiday on the Chinese calendar is the Chinese New Year. Their New Year is based on the lunar calendar, so celebrations begin on a new moon and last for two weeks until there is a full moon again!
Chinese New Year traditions include beautiful displays of fireworks all over the country, reuniting with family, and wearing red which is believed to symbolize good luck and fortune.
Each year there is a specific animal that represents what kind of year it is going to be, according to the Chinese zodiac. This year is the Year of the Rabbit. Following last years, Year of the Tiger, the Year of the Rabbit is believed to be a much calmer and more relaxing year. The people born in this year are also said to carry traits of a rabbit. They are typically social, loving and friendly.
The celebrations end 15 days later with a lantern festival. Traditionally the lanterns were used to keep away evil spirits and bad luck in the New Year. The lanterns are usually hand painted with Chinese zodiac signs or other scenes from Chinese history.
